The first thing you notice upon entering the Foundation Hall of the 9/11 museum are the 80-foot-long pieces of steel that formed the foundation of the original World Trade Center. Upon arrival at The Foundation Hall, you will find the Last Column. This is the last piece of Twin Tower steel removed from Ground Zero on May 20, 2002. Descend even further you come across a large piece of twisted steel that used to be located on the 93rd to 99th floors exactly where the first plane drilled into the tower.

Survivors' Stairs at the 9/11 Museum

In the central part of the 9/11 museum between the escalator and the regular stairs, there is a very special staircase called the Survivors’ Stairs. This staircase was used by hundreds of people to get to safety on September 11. Before the attacks, the stairs were used as a connection between the Twin Towers and the outdoor square. The staircase has 37 steps and is made of concrete and granite.

Ladder 3 was one of the first fire units to arrive at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. These farewell telephone calls really go to the bone and are very confrontational. There are also special niches with images that can be experienced as very shocking. If you don’t want to watch this, you can just skip it and go through it.

The 9/11 Memorial Museum’s Tribute Walk is a beautiful section of the museum where you can admire a variety of artifacts that have been donated to the museum in memory of the fallen firefighters and other victims.
