Battery Park or “The Battery” is a 25-acre public park in New York City named after a battery of cannons installed there by Dutch colonists in the 17th century to protect New York Harbor, especially during the War of Independence.

Battery Park is now a beautiful modern city park, but it was once a site of construction waste during the street-widening projects in Lower Manhattan, which connected the island of Castle Garden to the ‘mainland’ of Manhattan. Castle Clinton is a fort in Battery Park that was built in 1811. The fort is over 4,047 square meters in size and was designed by John McComb, Jr. In the nineteenth century, the fort, together with Fort Williams on Governor’s Island, was part of the city’s general defense system. Today, Castle Clinton is a museum and there is a ticket booth where you can buy tickets to the Statue of Liberty.
