Coffee drinking in New York was largely introduced in the year 1600 by the Dutch. Coffee was a beloved luxury item in the lives of the Dutch who then lived there in New Amsterdam, until the British took over power in 1664 and tea became the obligatory hot drink. But when the British started taxing tea, and almost everything else, Americans decided it was their patriotic duty to drink coffee instead. The consequences of that decision are felt to this day, because today you can buy coffee almost on every street in New York at various shops, coffee houses, street carts, bakeries, hotels, diners, bodegas and donut shops.
