Fifth Avenue is an upscale shopping street in New York City known for its luxury shops, department stores, and hotels, especially between 47th Street and 59th Street. But some of the most famous sights and attractions can also be found on Fifth Avenue, such as the Empire State Building, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Rockefeller Center and New York Public Library.

The History of Fifth Avenue

In 1811, Fifth Avenue was a country road to Yorkville, but soon grew into a luxurious villa district where expensive private homes of wealthy families such as Vanderbilt, Astor and Carnegie stood. And these families played an important role in building 5th Avenue into the best shopping street in the world.

In 1906, Benjamin Altman opened the first major department store at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue. Around the same time, the first luxury hotels on 5th Avenue were also built, such as the Fifth Avenue Hotel, the St. Regis and The Plaza.

In 1924, 5th Avenue continued to grow into a luxury shopping street and large luxury department stores were added, such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany Co.

Between 1931 and 1939, Rockefeller Center was built with even more stores as well as office space, restaurants, television studios, the world’s most famous ice skating rink and a giant Christmas tree every holiday season. And this was the final piece of the puzzle, Fifth Avenue had become the world’s largest shopping destination. And it still is that way.

Tiffany’s

Tiffany’s was founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany. The building, as well as its “flagship” store on Fifth Avenue, opened its doors on October 21, 1940 and now consists of no fewer than ten floors. Tiffany’s jewelry, silver, porcelain, crystal and watches are all iconic, as is the packaging: white and light blue boxes and statement bags. More than 40 works of art and never-before-seen pieces are also exhibited across the ten floors.

Rockefeller center

Rockefeller Center really completes 5th Avenue. It is a city within a city and named after John D. Rockefeller, whose family built the site during the Great Depression from 1930 to 1939. The complex is 89,000 square feet and consists of 19 buildings spread over three city blocks. It contains landmarks such as Top of the Rock, Rockefeller Plaza, Radio City Music Hall, the Comcast Building, and in the winter an ice skating rink and the famous Christmas tree. The Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue

New York’s Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue was once the tallest glass building in New York. And it’s Donald Trump’s showpiece. This beautiful skyscraper is 202 meters high and has 58 floors with a mix of apartments, offices and chic shops, such as Gucci, Tiffany Co and a wide range of Trump items. The building is open to the public and well worth a visit.

The New York Public Library (NYPL)

The New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan is over 23,000 square feet, making it the second largest public library in the United States. From the outside it is an iconic building guarded by the two world-famous marble lions Patience and Fortitude. But there is also plenty to admire inside the NYPL, such as a rare handwritten declaration of independence from Founding Father Thomas Jefferson. The beautiful building is located on Fifth Avenue at 50th Street in New York. The church is 110 m long and 58 m wide. The two pointed towers are over 100.5 m high. The front has three bronze doors and the building has more than 3,700 stained glass windows.

Central Park

Central Park in New York is an enormous park, 4 kilometers long and almost one kilometer wide. It runs from 59th to 110th streets and from Fifth Avenue to 8th avenue. The park is very popular with both New Yorkers and tourists to relax. There is so much to do in the park that one visit is not enough to do and see everything.
